'high school #9' by coop himmelb(l)au



a few lucky high school students will be returning to school in fall 2009 in a new building design by the austrian
firm of coop himmelb(l)au. the central los angeles area high school #9 for the visual and performing arts is now
complete after construction. the school will hold 1,800 students and features a central theatre that can hold
1,000 audience members. there are four classroom buildings for each of the school’s four art disciplines.
the school also features a library and cafeteria in the school’s seven total buildings. the school has a tower
on one building which features a ramp that is shaped like the number nine.

That piece that sticks out over the 101 FWY is probably one of the most ridiculous pieces I've ever seen. Pretty hard to believe that it came from Coop/Himmelblau.

I agree that this design concept is a bit far-fetched and contrived, as apposed to subtle. And also not really based on much geometrical discipline. Pretty hard to believe that it was CH's own decision to go this way! Having designed buildings of 3rd level ed. myself, I believe this building was rather the result of some retarded brains of teachers/high school admin., obsessed with leaving their retarded (NOT SO) visionary mark on the design... A real pitty....
