italian architect renzo piano sees environmental protection as a source of
inspiration rather than a constraint.

'ecology can be a lovely source of inspiration and an enormous opportunity',
the 71 year old said in an interview at his workshop in genoa, italy.

one of piano's most recent works the academy of sciences in san francisco,
earned the highest sustainability rating, awarded by the U.S. green building
council. the academy which opened in september is filled with ecological
innovations including a living roof that provides up to 10 percent of the site's
energy needs.

'our duty is to translate the codes of this ecological language in a poetic way,
to marry beauty with respect for the environment', he states.

incorporating green design in all his work, piano's workshop in genoa,
built about 15 years ago consists of a glass roof that utilizes sunlight for
heat and light.

'the architect should feel responsible towards the environment, all the
more so since ... he will need to continue to look after his work all through
his life'

piano has recently opened an office in new york, where he is currently
working on an extension of new york's columbia university and a museum
at harvard university, boston.
