jan mcfarland cox commissioned architect tom kundig of olson kundig architects to design her new home
in bellevue, idaho. while the home took a long time to finish, the owner and architects are pleased
with the completed results. the home is centred around a main living space. above, the bedroom
is accessed by a narrow staircase. the outside of the building showcases a simple form made
from concrete blocks and large glass windows. these windows bring light inside and link the home
to the wide dessert views outside. there is a walled garden outside, but the home’s tiny footprint is
dwarfed by the region’s expansive landscape.

Surprisingly cozy. Intriguing mix of openness to the desert and distant mountains and fortress-like protection from all that emptiness, especially in the long high-walled garden -- like what desert people do to keep out sand, human invaders, and the void. Another Olson gem.

I agree with escargo; the symmetricality of the door/window composition is a little strange, considering the extreme assymmetrical balance of the overall building/site. Looks like there is a programmatic reason for the placement, however. Otherwise, it is a really lovely structure, and very liveable looking as well! Another job well done, OK!

i wish owner would replace the dining room chairs!!! it doesn't work in this house.

Love overall design of house......Crucifix shape of windows at entrance is my favorite part.....but have to agree with Tam on those chairs (ugh!)...I think they need some tall ladder-back Charles R Macintosh chairs to emphasize the height of the space and to echo the beautiful ceilings.
