SFMOMA, san francisco
february 06 - july 07, 2009

the first ever solo museum exhibition by berlin’s j. mayer h. architects will be held at
the san francisco museum of modern art. the show will not only feature video
documentation of j. mayer h. built work, but will also consist of a full-scale
environment designed by the studio. the studio has been steadily growing over
the last few years and now has 35 projects that have been completed or commenced.
the firm is known for its commitment to formal and conceptual research, an important
part of which is data protection patterns (the patterns found inside of envelopes,
designed to conceal other information). something the studio’s principal, jurgen mayer h.,
calls ‘information mist’. this interest plays a key part in the exhibit’s installation
environment. the design features seating elements that contain video monitors and
projectors imposing data protection patterns as supergraphics. the monitors show
animated data patterns, while the studio’s work is project on the walls and ceiling’s
of the gallery. to complement the visuals, a sound installation will be included which
translates the visual patterns into sonic ones.
