chinese firm atelier feichang jianzhu (FCJZ) recently designed the china design now
exhibition that was on display at the cincinnati art museum. around one hundred
designers were featured in a display that focuses on architecture, fashion, and graphic
design as well as film, photography, product and furniture designs, youth culture
and digital media.
the exhibition took the form of a journey through three rapidly expanding cities—beijing,
shanghai, and shenzhen—each a starting point for the exploration of different design
fields the idea for the exhibition design was to materialize three distinctive urban
experiences through the interplay between different materiality, texture, light transmission
and construction method: for shenzhen (frontier city) the structure was hung from ceiling
using various plastic materials; showed the development of graphic design from the early
1990s to the present day; shanghai (dream city) the structure extended from wall to floor;
showing fashion and lifestyle from the mid-1990s to present day using thin translucent
fabrics; beijing (future city) the structure was laminated from the floor; showing
architecture and urban planning spanning from 2001 to the present day using opaque
blocks.
