completed in 2007, ‘openhouse’ is a residence that sits atop the hollywood hills, designed by
xten architecture. the home sits on a relatively small site that is very narrow and steep. however the
challenging site, led the architects to create a design that embraced it constraints. the final concept is
integrated into the landscape using retaining walls that extend the first floor directly into the hillside.
these walls also serve to create small private gardens on each side of the home. a liberal use of
windows connects the home to the gardens and the city of los angeles in the distance. the windows
on both floors can also be rolled together to open up the spaces to the outdoors. this defining feature
allows the occupants to take advantage of the warm weather and gives the home its name.
