lyn rice architects: parsons johnson design center

new york city’s parsons school of design now has a 32,800 sq. ft. campus nexus designed by
lyn rice architects. the well known design school recently opened the sheila c. johnson design center,
which will serve as a form of urban quad. the various buildings of the downtown campus are now all
unified in their circulation, using the new space as a non-traditional congregation point. the new space
boasts galleries, archives, an auditorium and seminar spaces in addition to it main floor lounge looking
out into the campus’s greenwich village setting. the lounge is continued on the exterior with deep
window frames that allow sitting. these windows are angled so that they direct viewers toward the
student work inside. the highlight of the space is the glass-roof quad which covers 1,600 sq. ft..
the space was designed to showcase student work as evidenced by the three stairways and elevator
shafts that serve as graphic surface to display work.
