icelandic architecture firm, studio granda was selected as the winner in a competition to design footbridges
over a new six lane urban highway near the reykjavik airport. a new system of pedestrian routes was added
along with the highway, the routes crossed-over the road three times, requiring three bridges. along with the
engineering firm línuhönnun, studio granda conceived of a spiral-like design that combines a circular core
of post-tensioned cables and a concrete desk with stainless steel handrails. concrete filled steel columns
support the bridge. the design allows the bridge to be curved in both plan and section and be tailored to the
terrain with minimal design changes. the bridges were completed in 2005.
