london based studio alison brooks architects recently completed the quarterhouse arts and business centre
in folkestone, england. the studio was selected as the winner of a completion to design the new
multi-purpose facility. the site takes its name form its location on the corner of tontine street in folkestone.
the building houses a 220 seat auditorium, as well as an exhibition space, café and business enterprise
space. the design was conceived of to serve as the center for the city of folkestone’s cultural hub.
the exterior of quarterhouse is made from a metal mesh that is bent in circular pillars. the unusual cladding
was inspired by both the city’s maritime iconography and the gentle waves of a stage curtain. the mesh
adds dimensionality to the façade changing its appearance depending on the light.
