iceland’s studio granda envisions a new gallery and residential building for a historical lot in downtown
reykjavík. the site sits at the corner of vegamótastígur and grettisgata in an up and coming area of the
capital city. the lot was originally home to two residences, one has since been demolished and the other
corrugated iron clad timber house has stood since 1904. this home was once home to renowned icelandic
painter jóhannes kjarval and nobel literary laureate halldór kiljan laxness. however the neighbourhood
around the homes has evolved and know sits adjacent to a number of bars and nightclubs. because of this
studio granda has envisioned a new mixed-use building that would feature a multi-story galley at street
level and three levels of soundproofed apartments above. the building would be clad in flat-panel copper
sheeting and feature a roof-top garden. however the key feature of the roof is that it will now house the a
rebuilt version of the site’s historic cottage. the building will uses large expanses of glass and a corrugated
copper on the upper levels, replacing the vernacular iron.
