duggan morris architects: yew tree lodge

london’s duggan morris architects create a contemporary housing unit for special needs tenants in
hillingdon, middlesex. known as sheltered housing in the UK, the residence houses tenants with disabilities
and special needs. this type of housing is typically uninspired and overlooked design wise. duggan morris
aimed to confront this typology with a fresh approach, injecting the design with flexibility and functionality.
their design also needed to fit in with the many arts and crafts style buildings in the neighbourhood.
the final design features an l-shaped two level unit that houses 12 tenants. the entrance is located at the
meeting point of the two wings and features a double height glass enclosed lobby. the residences are
located along two corridors, very simply furnished. the upper floors features cantilever bay windows that
allow guests to enjoy the environment. the exterior is made using bricks and terracotta roof tiles, blending
in with its historic neighbours. the simple form and protruding bay windows break up the large mass and
give the lodge a contemporary feel.
