norwegian architectural firm snohetta have been awarded the prestigious mies van der rohe
award for 2009 for their design of the norwegian national opera and ballet, oslo.

the building which opened in april connects the bay area of oslo to its waterfront. a main feature
of the design is its sloped structure which is composed of 36 000 individual bricks that forms
a ramp, which then becomes the building's roof, allowing members of the public to walk over
the top. the interior is constructed with wood and was built using techniques of norwegian boat
builders. consisting of 1100 rooms it is the largest cultural center to be built in norway.
