16A: TOO49

young japanese architecture studio 16A create a 6 story housing complex in haginaka, tokyo.
the structure contains 43 studio apartments and 6 two-bedroom units in its compact footprint. the building
incorporated the firm’s prototype idea to stack courtyard houses in not-too-close connection with
surrounding contexts. the aim was to make the building blend in with the surrounding area. the primary
design feature used to accomplish this was the angled roof which is clad in slate tiles and dotted with
windows into the apartments. 16A is a relatively new architecture studio, founded in tokyo in 2006
by architect tatsuya ogawa.
