eric owen moss architects: republic square

eric owen moss architects create a mixed use tower that neighbours the capitol building in almaty,
kazakhstan. the republic square is part of a large-scale development across the city of almaty. the tower
itself is 126,000 square feet that will be divided up between retail, office, hotel and residential spaces.
the building is a long tower which is anchored to the ground by a 38 meter diameter spiral. this feature
will enclose an indoor plaza or ‘winter garden’ connecting the two sides. the spiral provides major
support for the structure and encapsulates the five public venues near the ground level. in between these
five spaces, four courtyards let natural let in and are each shaped to represent the four seasons of the year.

This feels more like an invasion. A place where you check in, but may never check out.

I agree with you.... Fortunately, these type of designs are going to past soon. another 20 years, we might be seeing something more decent. I used to like moss a lot his early work, but his current work is just.... just.... just... you know what I mean. Maybe he is going through a period of finding out what he wants to do next....

Why modern architecture cannot be “normal”? Why architects don’t respect neighbourhood, local traditions and harmony with the srroundings? Why an architectural design must be strange or outrageous to draw attention to be called “good”? Why “art” takes over functionality and common sense doesn’t count much anymore? What happened to an old and good design school developed by FLW? When will we get that people belong to the ground, not to the sky or underground? That we need to live and work in functionally comfortable and healthy spaces with natural (and clean) light, air, water and verdure? Is better time coming any time soon?

This is really bad. Enough with all these 'organic' shapes just for the sake of it. It looks ugly and unbearable
