toronto’s superkül inc | architect transformed an old blacksmith’s shop in a back alley into the contemporary
40R laneway house. the building in mid-town toronto now houses a single-family residence measuring
850 sq. ft. the structure began life as a blacksmith’s shop in the 19th century and later becoming a silversmith’s
shop and an artist’s studio. because of tight zoning restrictions, addition windows on the sides weren’t possible,
so the architects focused on drawing light from above. this is noticeable in the two-story shaft with a skylight
that runs along the building’s west side. the upper floor features two bedrooms with a wood clad courtyard in
between. this courtyard leads to the rooftop garden. the building’s exterior is clad in the rusted steel cladding
salvaged from before the renovation and black-stained knotty cedar.

The materiality of this building is extremely bold. On the other hand the form is very simple.
