iwamotoscott architects have designed villa 43 for the ordos 100 project in inner mongolia,
china.

the overall form of villa 43 is conceived as a twisted stack of east-west oriented bricks.
the base geometry originates at the foundation as a square footprint rotated five degrees
from the recommended square footprint of the master plan by fake design. the brick skin’s
coursing patterns adapt to the villa’s geometry. the twisting south and north walls are clad
with corbelled, stacked stretcher bond brickwork; at the east and west facades this pattern
becomes staggered header bond brickwork, adapting to the walls 5 degree angled edges. 

vertical circulation wraps around a central courtyard as a double helix of intertwining interior
and exterior stairs, dynamically linking interior spaces with five interconnected outdoor spaces.
these five exterior spaces bring natural light and cross-ventilating breezes into and through
the interior of the house.  

the villa is comprised of a large living room, two kitchens and dining rooms, workers quarters,
a pool, gym, sauna, home-theater and guest suite form the base of the villa and connect to
the outdoor pool terrace to the east.
