monolab architects: building for bouwkunde

monolab architects propose a new faculty building for the department bouwkunde, at tu delft university
after the previous structure burned down in 2008. their building concept takes the form of a
‘triple landscape’ inspired by four agendas of the new structure; sustainability, education, urbanism and
architecture. as they describe, the building ‘communicates through three landscapes: the first on ground
level connects with the context, the second is elevated upside down and the third makes an outdoor
archipelago on the roof surface.’ this unusual design concept runs throughout the project, designing spaces
like clouds rather than rooms and laying out furniture to create hills of bookshelves and desks. at the heart
of the building, is an epi-center that is composed of studio spaces divided into small cell-like clusters.
sustainability was a key agenda and is considered in all materials and design features. the façade is
composed of glass to allow maximum light and to allow the space to feel fluid and connected to the
exterior.
