SANAA: derek lam boutique

SANAA: derek lam boutique

fashion designer derek lam opened his first boutique in new york design by the japanese studio SANAA.
the 2,800 square foot space in new york’s soho neighbourhood opened on may 6th. an opening reception
was held at the new location with the architects to celebrate. lam first met the tokyo-based duo,
kazuyo sejima and ryue nishizawa in 2005 and later commissioned them to develop a space for his label’s
first store. for the flagship store, SANAA created a transparent canvas of modulating acrylic curved walls
that divide the space without obstructing views. in addition to the interior, SANAA also developed a series
of custom fitted furniture made from wood and aluminum. the store is located inside a 19th century
manufacturing building that has been painted white inside and given a new one pour concrete floor. lam will
be using the space to display his ready-to-wear and accessories collections.

I like the way the glass curtains are reminiscent of artist Richard Serra's work.

The structure is beautiful. Transparency is dominating the conceptual 'shop in shop' approach. Hard to clean though.

LOVE SANAA.

of course their work is almost poetic in it's beauty but i feel that they are continiuously repeating themselves, but not in a good way. they have their architectural language but they don't seem to evolve in it.

Love SANAA but they are sadly starting to dry themselves up... like nearly all the other great contemporaries (H&DeM,OMA,Nouvel). Maybe the clue is to remain small? I´m thinking of Murcutt, Zumthor, Mendes..

not sure where you see the poetics, but is very boring space.... I visited this weekend the space...

Sometimes I wonder that if in order to do what is considered good design or poetics, one just needs some mayor publicity, hang out with the right people, couple of bs, here and there.. and you are half way to become popular and famous..

very poetic indeed. ...

i dearly love the work of sanaa, but yes, the first impression that i had when seeing this for the first time was "really? curved acrylic walls again?"

i do always appreciate what they do with concrete/cement and white, though. their language is simplicity. the walls and lush golden curtain would be the monotony-breaking elements here. perhaps they could have been bolder with the lighting design.
