SANAA: derek lam boutique

fashion designer derek lam opened his first boutique in new york design by the japanese studio SANAA.
the 2,800 square foot space in new york’s soho neighbourhood opened on may 6th. an opening reception
was held at the new location with the architects to celebrate. lam first met the tokyo-based duo,
kazuyo sejima and ryue nishizawa in 2005 and later commissioned them to develop a space for his label’s
first store. for the flagship store, SANAA created a transparent canvas of modulating acrylic curved walls
that divide the space without obstructing views. in addition to the interior, SANAA also developed a series
of custom fitted furniture made from wood and aluminum. the store is located inside a 19th century
manufacturing building that has been painted white inside and given a new one pour concrete floor. lam will
be using the space to display his ready-to-wear and accessories collections.
