daniel libeskind: zlota 44
|©aldinger & wolf
architect daniel libeskind adds a new high-rise to the skyline of warsaw, poland, inspired by the city’s
history. zlota 44 is a 251 unit building consisting of 54 floors. the building is currently under construction
and is projected for completion in 2010. being born in poland, libeskind wanted to create a building that
would give a new profile to the city’s skyline, embracing warsaw’s aspirations rather than being another
corporate building. the eastern face’s form is derived from the path of the sun, providing daylight to the
surrounding buildings. libeskind believes that residential buildings will play a major role in shaping cities
in the future and aims to create something architectural distinctive with this project. while most of zlota 44
will be devoted to residences there will also be a retail section and underground parking.

I love the quote - "the eastern face’s form is derived from the path of the sun". This is the sort of bullcrap an architectural student says to impress a professor when he needs words to distract from a stupid, mindless design. If this solution turns out anything like Libeskind's "Wedge" of Light" nonsense in New York, it will be another dumb joke from Studio Libeskind.
The wok of Daniel Libeskind is becoming more moronic with every project. Thankfully the economy has already put the kibosh on this one.
Add a silly curve here (Yawn), then distort a grid or two there (Yawn), write some meaningless rational to disguise the absence of real design (Yawn), add some bullshit about aspiring to the future of the city (Yawn)
YAWN, YAWN, YAWN!!
Enough of this boring, formulaic crap from the worlds most over-rated schlock-artist. Let's show some real architecture here!
Love it or hate it.
"Libeskind has a profound desire for a new time in which the experience of architecture aims at the liberation of space."
I don't even know what "the liberation of space" is. And I'm 100 percent sure you don't know what it means either. That sort of statement is the sort of garbage that Libeskind throws out to impress 1st year architecture students. It is so stupid as to defy rational attack. But worse, it presumes that space has been restricted until Libeskind came along. - Do you really think that we need to be liberated from fine design ideas like those used in the Parthenon, or the Gothic Cathedrals, or the Hing Kong Shanghai Bank (Foster)?

Yes. It can only be another piece of garbage from Studio Daniel Libeskind.
Regardless of its style or period, the brightly lit classically-inspired tower on the left of the photo above sets the standard for design excellence in this setting. Looked at in this context, Libeskind's tower is little more than a really dumb extrusion with a tacky curve stuck on. It lacks scale, proportion, detail or any of the attributes that traditionally gave buildings their humanist touches.
By Libeskind's low-brow standards, this might pass for design, but it will not have the staying power of the clock tower in this view.
With this pedestrian effort, as well as Libeskind's towers in Milan and Israel, he seems to be well entrenched in the "floppy dick" phase of his career.
