alsop architects: chips

alsop architects: chips

england’s alsop architects are nearing completion on their live/work design ‘chips’ in manchester.
the large scale residential project provides a mix of living and studio units along with a restaurant
north east of manchester city centre. the development is part of the larger new islington masterplan
situated on a brownfield site. the ‘chips’ design aims to set a standard for future development on this
site, setting a benchmark for sustainability. the building’s envelope  is specially designed to achieve
maximum efficiency, using CHP technology. the building was constructed using in-situ poured
concrete and prefabricated elements such as bathroom pods. however the structure’s most defining
feature is its stacked design reminiscent of a pile of chips (english slang for french fries).

BEAUTIFUL FUN on the outside.. it's the quality of living on the inside is what's going to count.

what is this written on the facades?

i think this is a good example of the case where something seems kind of balanced and interesting through the right proccessing in a 3d programm, whereas when built it just looks random and confusing.

I live next to this building, and whilst I don’t mind the shape, I really dislike the writing on it and I think the cladding looks cheap, patchy, incomplete and a little like it has just been cobbled together.

Some of the ideas for the regeneration of this area are brilliant, and I am really looking forward to seeing the area come to life again, but I think this particular building will look shoddy and dated too soon.

I would be interested to see how the inside looks though. Particularly as from the outside the windows appear to be pretty small and I would be interested to see how much natural light the flats get.
