australian architectural firm thomas jacobsen have sent us in images of their
recently completed design of the beresford hotel in sydney.
the project involved refurbishing a heritage building adding a contemporary public
bar, restaurant and large outside garden. during construction they employed
many techniques including 12 custom moulds that were designed for the curved bricks,
with black raked out mortar. all components were custom designed down to the ashtrays.

Great looking photographs but the space is a disaster the beer garden at the back is like a prison yard (not that I have had first hand experience of one) and the up lighters in the ground blind you when you try and locate friends or stand and chat. the restaurant is a pleasant enough space but has little ambiance and the bar is like a fishmongers the white tiles giving a clinical feel and terrible acoustics. This is a nice one for the architects portfolio but you wouldn't want to drink there.

This is an uneducated comment from someone who clearly hasn't eaten at one of Australia's best chef's restaurants. The photography is brilliant but what makes The Beresford is the vibe, music, the awesome cocktails and owners obvious appreciation for great design. This is a space Sydney has been lacking for the past two decades.

I have eaten there and drunk there.
It maybe that as you say "what makes The Beresford is the vibe, music, the awesome cocktails" but its not the design, which could have been so much better.
I agree with you that Sydney does lack well designed public spaces which makes it all the more important that we not accept dysfunctional design like as this.
For a city that spends a lot of time outdoors Sydney is lacking in good out side bar/restaurant areas but for good beer gardens visit the Green Park or the Tilbury Hotel and great bar/eating interiors at Rockpool bar and Grill, Establishment, or Cafe Sydney, Milli Vini, and Toko, where a good vibe works with comfort and functionality.

Over designed, over priced and under thought. The space just does not work with smokers and garden drinkers constantly walking through the eating area.
