cepezed architects: 'rabobrug' bridge

delft based cepezed architects have won the competition to design the new bridge
in the city centre of utrecht. the ‘rabobrug’ is a 275m long bridge for cyclists
and pedestrians that will be built across the train tracks next to utrecht central station,
the country’s main railway junction.

the bridge has been planned and anticipated for years, as there has never been
a connection between the two vital city quarters on both sides of the tracks.

features of the 'rabobrug' bridge are the ends and the row of trees that is integrated into
the design. since the ends are situated in crowded inner city sites, there is no room for
low-gradient ramps. therefore, use is being made of tapis roulants that will bring both
cyclists and pedestrians on and off the bridge. the trees form a raised extension of
the avenue of trees at ground level and thus embed the bridge into its urban surroundings
while simultaneously inviting its usage in a self-evident manner. at night, the bridge will
be illuminated.

the project is expected to cost around 14,5 million euros and is due to be completed in 2012.

can those big trees grow in that shallow soil and still stand firmly?

Yay, that's my city on Designboom!
Simon Bak   06.08.09
no Chen, they can't, that's the point...
a row of trees that extends an avenue with another row of trees, that's quite a poor concept
the way the columns stand is ok

Actually trees can be planted in the cavity created by the "V" shaped central beam. Too bad a cross-section wasn't included to visualize this. It also depends on the tree species chosen, some presenting less wind resistance than others.

Thats a great design alternative for cities!
It jst remember th new park in NYC.

I dont like this idea, no important trees can survive or not, is just the scale of the trees... Its not the landscape, it's like a child toy
