speed limits
the canadian center for architecture, montreal
may 20 – october 12, 2009

at the end of last month, montreal’s canadian center for architecture began their latest exhibition
‘speed limits’. the new show co-organized by the cca and the wolfsonian-florida international university,
‘explores the conflicting powers and limits of the cult of speed’. the exhibition looks at the role of speed
in modern life through architecture, art, design, economics and material culture. speed limits co-insides
with the hundredth anniversary of the italian futurist movement, which figures largely in the show.
through video, photographs and objects from the past 100-years, the exhibit takes a critical look at the
cult of speed and the divide between slow and fast. these materials illustrate the debate about speed,
showing both the negative effects and defending speed. the show has been installed in a linear fashion
with each room devoted to a particular theme. the exhibition was curated by jeffery t. schnapp, while the
exhibition design was by michael maltzan architecture and the graphics by project projects.
