diller scofidio + renfro has won a competition to design the ‘museum of image and sound’ in rio de janeiro, brazil. the architecture of the museum is based around copacabana beach with its coastline, wrap around building wall, its mountains and its distinctive beach promenade designed by roberto burle marx, which consisted of a traditional portugese paving pattern using waves of black and white stone sets.

the building is conceived as an extension of that boulevard, stretched vertically into museum. the structure will consist of indoor and outdoor spaces branching out into galleries and spaces for public leisure and entertainment. the vertical circulation sequence connects the street with the building’s entertainment programs from the view into the auditorium to the elevated terrace bar and cafe, the piano bar at the third level, the restaurant at the sixth and outdoor cinema at the roof.
