well if they were going to build a self sustaining city they should have built a city for people to live in, not a tourist destination. many people will want to visit...and how will they get there?? we all know there not going to cycle..when you add up the cost of air travel by the visiting tourists, the fuel used to ship the food and other material supplies needed to run a city it doesnt look so self sufficiant after all

They are actually creating living space, and an entire university in the city. The tourism attractions is the extra push to feed and drive the economy out there because not all the cities withing the UAE have oil to run off of. Dubai does not have oil and is run primarily on marketing/trade and tourism. Projects like this city are a testing of the waters for the middle east to eventually launch on larger scales. And it is a very, very realistic city that will be complete soon. I work out in the middle east and the only people that would doubt the construction of such cities out there are people who have yet to visit Dubai, Bahrain, Qatar and Kuwait. And remember commenter that what even thoughts or arguments you post about technical questions to whether or not it is physically possible to construct or if certain theories can be successful, these are people with more money then you will ever live to even count, and they are working with top scientist and professionals from all over the WORLD to calculate, analyze, speculate and execute these plans. When they said self sustaining they are referring to energy consumption. With the heat reaching levels of 120 degrees Fahrenheit and almost 365 days of sunlight they can do it. The people within the United states can't understand the directions other countries are going because we have no neighboring countries to team up with. It's not a statement to attack my people or government or even out potential. It is just not east to understand, relate or even compare to because many countries that neighbor one another tend to work together on large projects such as the European union for example, or these cities and other crazy buildings and energy changes in the middle east, or Asia working together on research. So one can comment on such an article without having to attack anyone in anything. It is a reality that cities like this will emerge in the middle east. It is not however a reality that the United States will see, simply because our country functions differently. You can't compare apples to oranges, and to disagree on the point that the different countries of the different regions of the world function differently, is ignorant.
