located on a 150-acre estate in canada's niagara-on-the-lake wine region, southbrook vineyards recently
opened their new pavilion designed by diamond+schmitt architects. the environmentally designed structure
received LEED gold certification and an international architecture award form the chicago athenaeum.
the building’s design is anchored by a 200m long wall that is finished with a pigmented stucco, allowing it
to change colour depending on the light. the wall is only interrupted by the single entryway, leading to the
pavilion. the main volume is open to the vineyards with floor to ceiling glass walls and an overhanging
roof. inside, there is a shop, wine tasting room, wine library and storage facility all separated by wine
barrels enclosed in glass. the wine production facilities on this biodynamic vineyard are located on site in
other buildings. the vineyard features a comprehensive storm water recovery system, some of which is
stored in the reflecting ponds running along the main wall, and a natural wetlands for treating wastewater.
