LEGO house update

LEGO house update

image: INS

the house built from LEGO that was built earlier this month has now been demolished after a deal to sell
it fell through. the LEGO house is the latest toy challenge by james may, a british television presenter,
for his BBC series james may's toy stories. because the home didn’t have planning permission on its site,
the builder were hoping to find a buyer to transport the house elsewhere. LEGOland theme park showed
interest, but the high cost of transportation didn’t make it a good deal in their eyes. the 3.3 million LEGO
bricks used to build the home will be donated to charity once the home is no more. these images show
a work crew ripping the home apart and james may inside the home after it was completed. read more at
the telegraph.

what a waste of time. what was the point of this?
rodney jick   09.24.09
Its pretty good. Its the least depressing demolition i've ever seen. If we built everything from lego, there would never be a sad day.

and rodney, you sir, are an idiot. destined to sit in a sorrowful lonely grey box office with all your nark friends complaining about the fun things everyone else is doing. Why does there have to be a point in anything? if your only going to live for 60 or so years why does everything have to make sense? design boom opens minds don't destroy the fun with your negative pestilence
thewhodio   09.24.09
Yes, I agree, this was a wonderful little project but— like all built-up or stacked up toy structures — the knocking down is just as entertaining.
Mushi   09.24.09
the house was made from peoples old, donated lego bricks, so in a way, was incredibly responsible. Though I don't know what they're gonna do with them now...?Send them to africa?

I apologize for my earlier comments. I too, it seems, am an idiot.
The whodio   09.24.09
You are no idiot, Mr. Whodio, I actually loved your comment so much that I quoted you on my fb status this morning. Yes, everyone is entitled to an opinion. Isn't thinking someone is an idiot an opinion? Why make discrepancies about which opinions you feel are allowed? *looks at dvn* If EVERYONE is allowed, as you say, then leave it be.
Lastly, the whole environmentally friendly issue is ridiculous, if you don't mind me having an opinion on this matter. You said yourself Leggo doesn't make any effort to recycle their product. Well, isn't this a way to recycle old leggos? In fact, what is the difference between the environmentally friendly "Earth Ships" that build houses out of used tires and such and this project which uses retired leggos as its medium? Isn't that the definition of recycle? "Recycling involves processing used materials into new products to prevent waste of potentially useful materials..."- wikipedia

I think it's cool! I like the "window" detail :)
MJW   09.25.09
I think this is one of the greatest lego projects I've ever seen! F the enviroment!

@dvn

hey look, i found the house made out of plastic bottles!
http://www.odditycentral.com/pics/the-house-of-plastic-bottles.html

but otherwise, i think this house would've been cool in LEGOland.
vik   09.27.09
My partner has bought and sold second hand lego for a few years now, and we sometimes wonder if the same pieces end up back in our house.

I don't know how recycle-able Lego actually is, but it seems to have a long life, passing from person to person to be enjoyed. So doesn't that inherently make it more envirnmentally friendly.

In fact, as I think about it, I don't know of any other toy product that it so sought after second hand and long lasting enough to be able to sell it after 5 years, 10 years, more?

Lego truely has taken over my life ...
Vicki   09.28.09
Hey Nate - Have you ever PLAYED with Legos?
Amanda   09.28.09
it is for a up coming bbc documentary....
carl   09.28.09
You guys are nuts! They even said that they are donated the lego to charity after this project is done? The environment? Is a kind building his lego everyday destroying the environment? Frustrating..
Mike   09.29.09
This IS recycling - a new use for older legos. But really, legos are great - they rarely break, they don't wear out, and can really be used for generations. While I can't stand so much of today's throwaway world, I can't argue with legos.
ebilucy   09.29.09
I agree. Every lego I have in my house I bought at a garage sale. They hold their value for generations. Other than clay I can't think of a better toy for kids. You would be amazed what their imaginations can do when you give them these things They spend hours. When we are done with them we will send them to some other kid to expand their mind. We need the kids to help protect the environment and this would be a good lesson in recycling for them. No kid would ever let their legos go in the trash!
ws 9.29.09   09.30.09
The story did say that the Lego used in building the house will be donated to charity, not a landfill.
Patrick   09.30.09
the house is just build for fun and to prove it's possible, well he did
harry   09.30.09
I think many people fall into the trap of believing that only products that are recyclable are environmentally friendly and the converse, that non-recyclable products are damaging to the environment. Sustainability is rarely so black and white a subject - a product, like Lego, that has a super-long lifespan can be just as "green" as a single-use, recyclable object. Indeed, recyclability is not necessarily the holy grail of product design, just because a product can be, doesn't necessarily mean it IS recycled - surely we should be encouraged to produce products that have longevity? We must look at the cradle-to-grave impact of a product before condemning or celebrating its environmental credentials.

I have just reclaimed, for my new daughter, the family Lego collection that has been built up over 40 years.
