the new duke university - national university of singapore designed by RMJM was dedicated this past
monday. the new graduate school is the first western medical school to open in singapore. at eleven stories
high, the new building is very vertical and boasts a plethora of sustainable design measures, which earned
it green mark certification. inside, the campus will house research offices, laboratories, classrooms, lecture
halls, a library, lounges and a cafe. the focal point of the interior is the glass enclosed eight-story atrium,
which connects the main level to the office space above. the building was specifically designed to meet
the needs of singapore’s tropical climate. louvers on the exterior act as sunshades, protecting the interior
from the sun while allowing the air to circulate. the building’s massing also provides shade for exterior
courtyards. the façade is clad in ceramic tiles containing titanium dioxide, a material which keeps
maintenance down, withstands tropical mold and is believed to reduce pollutants in the air.
