tiago barros + jorge pereira: high-speed car ramp

tiago barros + jorge pereira: high-speed car ramp

an aerial view of the high-speed car ramp

fundacao galp energia and experimentadesign recently promoted a
competition for a new cycling bridge in lisbon. one of the special mentions was
'high-speed car ramp' by portuguese architects tiago barros + jorge pereira with team:
ines valente and joao paulo fernandes who asked, 'why change the route of pedestrians
and cyclists?'. their proposal was a high-speed car ramp which enables pedestrians
and cyclists to freely cross under the segunda circular highway in lisbon.
instead, the path for cars is altered by a ramp which acts as a bridge for vehicles.
drivers are expected to accelerate on a ramp, burning more gas. barros and pereira's design is
meant to provide a long lasting event which will occur at every moment in which a car goes by.
the ramp would provide entertainment, along with a new tourist attraction, acting as a means of
redeveloping the area.

I wonder what happens in traffic jams... ;-)

Eeeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaa!!!
Lex Zetta   10.06.09
what a moron. im sure average people are gunna be totally cool with jumping their 17,000 dollar cars over this to get to work. why not just put a bridge over the road for pedestrians. the insurance alone for this "ramp" would cost more than a bridge.
ouch my head hurts from sifting through retards.   10.06.09
I dare the designer to try the ramp himself.
Charles   10.06.09
Só podia ser uma idéia de "portugues" mesmo ....
Mas esqueceram de colocar uma oficina para os carros batidos depois de cada rampa

It could only be an idea of "Portuguese" even ....
But forgot to put a garage for the crash cars after each ramp
Guilherme Lorenzoni   10.06.09
muito fish pa'!
gilles   10.06.09
why should the people have to go over - make the cars go over instead. even if this doesn't work... its at least thinking in the right direction - and who knows if it'll work until u try it out a bit.
x   10.06.09
very dumb. this post (and site?) is a waste of time.
are the bloggers 4 year olds?   10.06.09
I like the metal model
The designers are obviously making two very succint political statements through their architecture:
1. A bridge you can't drive over in your car
2. A road you can't cross as a pedestrian
Very poetic - the portugese rock
eebygum   10.06.09
This one is really stupid - its just a bridge with a bit missing. There's no reason for or benefit from this solution. It's this kind of gimmicky nonsense that gives 'design' a bad name.
Also you cant peel tarmac up from the ground like that.
This doesn't work on any level and the only thoughts it provokes are "Did someone get paid to come up with this bs?"
YET MORE DUMB IDEAS   10.06.09
quando isto for arquitectura... eu sou o pai natal. Só pode ser gozar com quem trabalha
ikas   10.06.09
i think thats a main bus route ha ha
juan   10.06.09
I thought this was a joke, is it?? lol how can designers like this be taken seriously??, what a joke!!!
Zillul Halim   10.06.09
I think there might be a problem with this solution. Although portuguese drivers love to speed, the jams on that road are terrible and you would hardly ever get close to 120km/h, meaning the passage under the ramp would quickly get clogged by car wrecks.
I think the solution would be to create some kind of draining system for crashed cars to flow to the side, where you could have a metal shreder to instantly process the metal for recycling.
Great idea, very funny and subtle statement
ricferr   10.06.09
Love the graphic of the '01' car giving it a try. Awesome. A very effective demonstration of concept, regarding the value of high velocity gas-powered transportation versus human-powered options. Bravo!!
Smoggy Traffic   10.06.09
ivo lapa   10.07.09
Idea is not as solid as those models, which are quite beautifull!

odin   10.07.09
impossible project.............
TheSkunk   10.07.09
This is insane , what about if we have a huge bus or a lorry // should it jump over this unstudied ramp .. futhermore this is not a bridge !!
Ironi   10.07.09
absolutely brilliant. I love the image of the car just about to fly over the squashable people. Also the promotes tourism argument is great. Even the built model (what is that, a hood from a cooker ?) is funny.
Its also ironic that the entry inverts the idea of the original competition and gives a fresh look to the problem to come up with a novel (and hilariously ridiculous) solution. Great design gone bad deliberately - brilliant.
auld   10.07.09
this is an out of range idea in my country Iran (IRI) nowdays! HaaaHHaaaAAAhaaaahhhhhhhhhaaaaa!!!
Prof. musavi   10.07.09
It is real or it's only a joke?!!!
Ashraf   10.07.09
"And now, for something completely different!"

Boa crítica! Temos que saber rir de nós próprios, do que fazemos e dos concursos a que concorremos!

That's a good statement! We must be able to laugh at ourselves, at what we do and at the contests we participate!
Mr. Tugasman   10.07.09
I just looooove sarcastic designers!!! :-D
are the pedestrians crossing underneath provided with helmets? or band aids, at least? :-)
i find it's great, because like that much less material is used, at least streetwise... and the automobile industry would certainly get a boost, because many people would soon need a new car!
if the gap between the ramps is clogged with carwrecks, then at least SUVs and offroad cars get some sort of reason of existance.

and ashraf: "It is real or it's only a joke?!!!", well think about it!
phil   10.07.09
if the idea is to make nonsense arcitecture at least they could do a loop... that would be more interesting...
i guess it´s not their fault if the jury decided to give them a mention... who´s the jury anyway santa claus?!
archy   10.07.09
huummm.....
i´m sure herman josé is behind this!
mono   10.07.09
it would be tragic if a car gets the wrong way. At least would be a very plastic crash hahaha
marin   10.07.09
the perfect solution to spend time occuping your mind when you've been struck with "paralysis through analysis"
i'm sure if this project was undertaken by students you'd find diagrams like these all over the place...
that said... where's the real solution now?
stop taking life so seriously you debbie downers   10.08.09
I'd love to see the faces of the Soccer moms (in there massive trucks) once airborne..... Fort Worth TX all up in this bitch!
crizza   10.08.09
The comments here clearly demonstrate that a lot of people have NO SENSE OF HUMOUR!!!
Did you really think this was a legitimate idea?
You're probably the same people who forward those retarded emails that claim hotmail is running out of email addresses.
FFS people learn to laugh!!!!
still laughing   10.08.09
My complaint is that no bicycles would take the lower route for reasons of safety either.

Those car drivers always spoiling things...

what the hell is this??

Is there no moderation for stupid ideas?

1. the required speed must be calculated for every single vehicle.
2. will there be a toll for using the ramp, making it profitable?
3. how about a pedestrian catapult instead?
LarSo   10.08.09
r-i-d-i-c-u-l-o-u-s.

so this is what architects spend time on? no wonder they're all working in cafés now, society can only handle so much wanking...
an ashamed portuguese engineer   10.08.09
hey, even as a concept!
even as a concept it is just something that... is not even funny. even if you're stoned, even if you're 4 years old, even if you're both.
an ashamed portuguese engineer   10.08.09
fancy........get real dude!!!
m bisht   10.08.09
It's a bit disturbing that so many commenters have taken this work seriously. The study is great fun. But, it says a lot about what architects are compelled to do with our time when real projects aren't coming along fast enough in the slower economy. Actually, aside from the lampoon of our automobile culture, there are some real insights in the solution that point out the need to daylight the typical pedestrian underpass.
F Watts   10.08.09
what is this? don't post this.
jon   10.09.09
anyone complaining about this has no sense of humour. the time you spend watching "unreal" stuff like this on tv, cinema, and youtube, and all of a sudden it makes its way to a different market and you get upset. perhaps you should re-think your values. give a little laugh and let it fall off your shoulders. this is hilarious.
sip   10.09.09
hehehe don't think my car manage to do this :)
wrablox   10.09.09
GREAT!!!
For the architects and the jury for having a sense of humor and showing that there's still space for thinking in alternative ways, even if it leads to something "impossible" for today's reality. This is liberating!

Congrats!
