9 h - nine hours capsule hotel in kyoto

9 h (nainawasu) is a new capsule hotel that offers luxury in a minimum living space.
the 9 h capsule hotel and all amenities were designed by fumie shibata of design studio s,
which she founded in 1994. with her team, she defined the elements necessary for a
'minimal transit space' in big cities in japan. the product designer has been pursuing
the 9h project as a creative director for 3 years.

the first hotel will opened in december this year, located in shimogyo-ku, kyoto, located on
teramachi street between department store fujii daimaru and convenience store AMPM,
two minutes walk from kawaramachi station. the building itself will be 9 stories tall,
will host 125 capsules, locker rooms, showers, and a lounge.

Wow. I am really amazed! Definetly a reason to plan a trip to Japan
Jette   11.10.09
luxury?! are u serius?
I think that luxury is to have the right time to do things... and right space to do things...
and not sleeping like a chicken!!!
Vk   11.10.09
This is not suitable for claustrophobic people like me! Too little space...no good!

thats not a hotel its a kennel, they could have at least made them a little wider, a little less coffin shaped!
andrew B   11.10.09
Its nicer than the living quarters of the commercial longline fishing vessel that I have lived and worked on for several years. So I guess it doesn't seem so bad. Especially if you could save a lot of money over a traditional hotel. Logical idea for a crowded world

Being nicer than a fishing vessel doesn't exactly qualify something as luxury. Not to mention that it's not that cheap because you're paying for Mount Fuji water and the designer's ego.

I stayed one night in a capsule hotel in Shinjuku. There were some great things about the experience, like the enormous bathroom on the top story, including the option of having a delightful lady wash you if you felt like being pampered. Massage of course, nice ramen noodles and beer.

The absolute worst was the fact that there was only a flimsy curtain at the "door" of the capsule. So starting at dawn and going on endlessly there was a chorus of other capsule dwellers alarm clocks to shatter my sleep.

So, unless somehow this new deisgn addresses that issue, you are in for a dreadfully interrupted 7h.

I can see this as the future. As our communications become more mobile, we can also. Especially those who don't feel the need to own a lot of stuff. These can replace houses, for those people.
Dug   11.11.09
Are there optional bedpans to rent? I'd hate to have to get up and dressed and re-enter a public space, barely awake because of my bladder.
Old dude   11.11.09
The majority of hotels in Japan are not designed for tourists - but instead for salary men. Salary men pass out just fine wherever they are.
mxs   11.11.09
it's awful!!
boarderele   11.11.09
Great idea only if the capsules are sound proof, there are times I wish I could shut the world out for just a little while and enjoy complete silence.
K   11.11.09
I just like the idea of the 1h shower.

Ahhhhhh ............
Mushi   11.11.09
haha use r forgettin this is not a hotel, have you never seen a capsule before they have been around a while now this is not new in japan, Like a comment posted above says, They are mainly used for a cheap overnight stay not for a holiday, And these compared to some of the capsules i've seen are pretty luxurious, Wait until you see the older capsules!
MH 11.11.09   11.11.09
is there a double room? 7 h in the tube can get lonely
alf   11.12.09
I spent years riding around in US Navy nuclear submarines. This is infinitely roomier and better tricked out than a bunk on a sub. And an hour in the shower? Heaven!

Buzz Buzz Buzz... do they serve honey and is there a queen bee... oh I meant Queen bed size...LOL

This is just a fresh look of the old Japanese cell hotel that exists since 15 years. Yotel is a new product inspired by the same concept but brought to a much higher level of sophistication . www.Yotel.com

Americans are such idiots. Get over yourselves. Welcome to the Real World, 2009.
SickOfAmericans   11.12.09
I think airports are missing a trick by not having capsule hotels. Every time I've had a layover of longer than two hours, I've thought about how quickly I would shell out money for a quiet place, in the airport, to lay down and nap the layover away.
jas   11.12.09
I;m not sure, but I wouldn't expect an 1 hr shower considering how many people would like to use it too on the same time. Unless they have as many showers as capsules.
junior archt.   11.12.09
a possible consensus after reading all the comments above is that these could be used for power naps in public places like train stations, near parks, in urban areas, large office buildings etc. Forget the 9 hour thing for now, give me 30 minutes of shut-eye for a modest flat rate.

Francesco   11.13.09
You all sound so hopelessly uneducated. I will reiterate what I hope someone has stated before me: THIS IS NOT A NEW THING. Capsule hotels have existed in Japan for a long time now, this is a redesign, a new idea regarding capsules, if you will. This is not the invention of the house, it is a new take on the house. It's all about an economy of means... The maximum function in the minimum of space.
