3LHD architects recently completed the massive zamet centre in rijeka, croatia. the centre has over 16,000
m2 of area, complete with a large sports hall, community offices, library and 13 retail and service spaces.
one third of the volume is cut into the ground to conserve space. the design of the facility was planned
around a concept of ribbon-like stripes stretching over the site in a north-south direction. the stripes act as
a planning system in addition to providing an architectural element. the concept was inspired by a type of
rock local to the area, which influenced the stripes as well as the form and colour of the building.
the building is clad with custom designed ceramic tiles. the interior features lots of natural illumination and
a flexible space that can be modified for everything from large sporting events to concerts and conferences.
