'droog town house' was developed in collaboration between droog design and tokyo
architectural firm atelier bow-wow to renovate a town house located close to vondel park
in amsterdam. in town house typology that is narrow and vertical such as this one, it is
unavoidable for the staircases to dictate the special layout that is clearly divided into floors
and rooms. as droog furniture has character of their own and are essential elements in creating
the living spaces, they needed to be in relation with one another rather than separated in
different rooms. in an attempt to accommodate the needs of the furniture in this typology,
bow wow proposed a house without staircases, instead the whole house becomes inhabitable
steps.

in place of divided rooms, each step performs as the place for furniture and living.
the functional programs that is necessary to a house is situated at the back of the house
efficiently and privately, while the street side of the building is kept open with free flowing
space with out clear boundary between rooms or floors.  this spatial concept is strengthened
and activated by the placing of droog furniture.

given the typical amsterdam town house typology, the challenge was how to create fluid
and one continuous space in this vertical space to provide a stage for droog furniture and yet
comfortable living at the same time.  as a result, they were able to create a unique yet functional
single home that flows vertically with dramatic contrast of spaces within the framework of
a typical town house.

droog's first house which will be presented at design miami from dec 1 to 5th, 2009.
