MAD architects has sent us images of a new project, urban forest, located in chongqing, china.
drawing on the mountainous landscape of the country, the commercial high-rise building,
is made up of curved, abstracted shaped floors which have been layered slightly off-center
from one another. connected by a core cylindrical structure, each level's interior is
protected by full length glass windows with a see-through, wrap around balcony.
this provides transparency throughout the building, and makes the floors almost seem as if
they are floating on top of one another. the overall design brings together nature and the
urban metropolis, with the incorporation of green space and large expansive views of the city.

...ma in caso di sisma?....
mastroianni architetto sergio   11.30.09
Has this actually been constructed?
Rebecca   11.30.09
no, but the renders are really nice
andrea   11.30.09
this kind of worthless garbage makes even frank gehry look good by comparison.
ray jay   11.30.09
the question would be: WILL this actually be constructed?
it seems fragile, would it resist earthquakes?
iomonk   11.30.09
the questions is: is this really necessary? or
Does this kind of project propose something new to think o make a reflection in architectural terms?
p filmus   11.30.09
its just a stack of pizza wet pizza boxes.
Fulvio Stefaninni   11.30.09
Last time I checked, China was an earthquake prone region....
Ali Manço   11.30.09
Every story is 4m high. A tree is ten, plus its rootsystem.
des   11.30.09
Nice, poetic pictures. But naïf.
oliver   11.30.09
you all have your heads in the sand. were mad for it.
moderndesign2120   11.30.09
Reminds me of the Jetsons...not sure if thats good or bad
dom   11.30.09
whoever thinks that an outdoor space at 600 feet high is atractive has never been that high
...yeahh that would be so cool!... blablabullshit
amigdal   12.01.09
it's a fantasy, a visualisation of possibilities, a departure from the norm, stacks of living space.

It's well rendered an maybe in the future trees can be grown with neat hydro roots?

Relax it's just an idea.....
issyvivi   12.01.09
Cant understand why, for all of you, all those "real" skyscrapers around look better or safer than MAD's proposal
For me its as insane, phalic, unsafe, etc, as all its neighboors... yet, less boring...
Ricardo Antonio   12.01.09
there will be many static engeneering problems, but the idea is pretty cute
kai   12.01.09
This looks like a well rendered project of someone who just learned the basics of Rhino...Although I'm excited about the prospect of vertical landscaping this project goes no further than digital masterbation. There is little or no structure to the building, no mechanical spaces, and the floor thickness would not support such plant life. I would be much more interested in a project that attempts to take a closer look at those systems integration as opposed to photoshopping trees in and calling it a forest.
-drs   12.01.09
can't remember going to any 'ray jay' buildings lately ... nope, don't think I did ...then again i may have, just can't remember it.
i remember the last gehry one though
peter Mclisky   12.01.09
Something similar aesthetically, though not as extreme has been built in Chicago. Look up "Aqua" by Studio Gang Architects.
still flyin'   12.01.09
all architectures in rendering are prefect, visually.
edmund   12.01.09
Don't be that bullheaded. Maybe there are some technical things which are not thought out to the last detail, so what. Open your mind, Trees could be bushes in reality, the balustrade of the balconies could be ceiling-high, and so on.
This is definetly not a fast sketch, everyone who made renderings in this quality knows what I am talking about.
In the end it is a phantastic sketch, a great phantasie and a I am shure buildable, with a little help of people who likes to get visions going. But this, but that, but here, but there - just stupid trashtalking coming in most cases from pampered people can't hold a pencil the right way.
max   12.01.09
looks like the MVRDV project from a while ago in Seoul, but uglier

tjeenk   12.01.09
look!! another well example of a render wich shows another well example of innplausible architecture
debasteitor   12.01.09
wat if structural system is worked out properly....n its safe inuf as others....
psyKd   12.01.09

send this project to engineer consultants, they can make it work. Anyway, idea is cool
WEE   12.02.09
This is China, they're no strangers to ridiculous/outlandish/shouldn't-really-be-built architectural projects. Don't be too surprised if it happens.

Although yeah, Chongqing isn't too far from the epicentre of the Sichuan earthquake that hit in 2008 (close enough for the city to shake pretty violently) and this doesn't look all that earthquake proof...
