ryuichi ashizawa architects have designed the kobe portisland factory located in the industrial area of kobe hyogo, japan.

usually in japanese industrial areas rather than visual design, the productiveness, effectiveness and low costs are only considered.

the project brief was to create a spatially flexible, functional area for both office work and operations and correspondence with ground staff. as a result ryuichi ashizawa architects developed ‘x bracing’ columns, assembled on reinforced slabs of concrete to create a huge space minimizing expenses. two separated spaces are  connected by the stairs through the atrium.
