OFIS architects: four leaf clover kindergarten

four leaf clover kindergarten by ofis

'four leaf clover kindergarten' is a design proposal by slovenian firm OFIS architects.
each leaf represents one department with associated facilities. the entrance leads to
the central part with the common areas, which are positioned and distributed in three
floors: a ground floor with the main entrance and outdoor central common playgrounds
for additional activities, the first floor with administration/offices and underground level
with kitchen, services and technical areas.

the material, structure and cladding are all natural produced in the local area. the structure
of the building is simple  and uses reinforced concrete cores with brick and wooden fillings.

Interesting building - appalling outdoor spaces. Have the architects actually explored what young children need in terms of learning evironments? Please visit www.ltl.org.uk (Learning through Landscapes, the UK's national school grounds charity) for some ideas about how outdoor spaces can become part of young children's continuous learning environment.

Interesting use of CAD for building design, but so often you see a lack of understanding in how the indoor spaces flow into the outdoor spaces to maximise opportunities for child developement.

Quite appalling architectural solution and extremely well presented as well. I like the organic forms and the way how the leafs, being centrally designed by itself, are positioned around the centre of the building, logically following the functional flow.
I would agree with some other commentators that the flow between indoor to outdoor spaces is not satisfactory, but I believe that it might only be the lack of details on the rendering on which outdoor looks kind of sterile.

As a much bigger flaw, I see the fact that some kids' rooms are lacking direct sun light which might prove as a handicap especially in winter-time. Parking area is way to small for the needs of the parents and kindergarten's staff as well as badly positioned (access to the main entrance, traffic jam in peek hours,...).
Due to low-res, I was not able to identify the vertical communication between floors, except the lift shaft.
