OIII architects: commercial bank of ethiopia proposal

commercial bank of ethiopia by OIII

dutch firm OIII architects received a special mention for their proposal in the competition
to design the commercial bank of ethiopia.

the city’s pattern of public roads, squares and parks is carried through into the CBE’s design.
by connecting five towers to each other around a central atrium, a space is created which
continues into the bank’s immediate surroundings. glass façades enclose the atrium but,
recessed against the towers and therefore in the shade, offer a transparent and open view
into the heart of the CBE.

the round base of each tower forms a public space - similar to traditional villages,
ethiopian landscapes and caves. the towers (A, B, C, D and E) form a harmonious unit
individually and together.

the external round shapes are visible from the inside of the building. several external
facades cut through the cylinder-shaped towers vertically, creating an uninterrupted facade
around the building and emphasising the towers.

the 5 cylinders each have separate facilities

intelligent architecture that defends and sees the importance of the cultural symbols in defining a locational specificity.

the image is great but we arquitects have in our hands the image of how our future society will be a tower in the midle of etiopia looks a little out of hand in new york in tokio its understood but in etiopia where the conection between human and soil is incredible where space exists why vertical. not everything as to be occidentalized this mentality makes as loose what makes a space a country a continent so unique. example: in mozambique after the civil war, abondoned buildings wher left by the colones the majority of the population that ran away from war ( in the bush) and went to live ( cities) in this vertical constructions. moral of the story they brought the chikens, goats, and mini farms into the apartments some people even drank water from what seemed to them to be a well. preexistings are not only fauna constructions. mentality is the biggest preexisting.

well...does it stand in the middle of the bushes (see render) or on the corner of a huge crossroad (see plan)?

but I believe a bunch of palm trees made it more "african"...no?

Used to stay in Addis Ababa... there is no palm tree there, city is at altitude 2200m.
Interresting concept and design anyway.
