olgga architectes: 'crou' - 100 recycled container student housing

'crou' student housing made from 100 recycled shipping containers

french architecture firm olgga architects has designed a student housing complex called 'crou'
constructed from 100 recycled shipping containers. located in le havre, france
the individual shipping containers are stacked on top of one another, each signifying a
different student's room.

this project is really beautiful

Why is this news? Architecture students have been coming up with housing solutions that use shipping containers since *I* was in architecture school in the 1970s.
Jeff Jansen, Portland, OR, USA   01.26.10
Did a similar design for an architecture office some while back. Interesting approach, not a new one. Hope there next one has stairs in them. Is it me or are we humming birds flying into our homes?

Anyway I consider it to be a bold approach. Good luck.

It's the new old. Would've loved to have been a student living in one of these. One primary concern would be how sound travels and if claustrophobia might not settle in?
Shirlock67   01.26.10
Looking at the container housing we have on campus I would be afraid that this project has the potential to look particularly bad/sad after a couple of years of wear and tear, especially on the outside.
And from the same experience: sounds travels pretty happily and seeing there are no really thick walls in this project either, I would imagine they would have the same problem. But nice way of stacking them.
ahummingbird   01.26.10
the architect must have forgotten the windows hahaha

Initial sentiment seems good but think about it - why treat humans as products ? Containers are for products, humans need houses, designed and built for them specifically. Being shoved into an old crate wouldn't do anybody's self esteem much good. Imagine this under a grey sky - dismal and depressing.

Finlay,
That is really not an extreme case of "boxing" people. Check this out!!! That is EXTREME!!!

Damn, and I thought I was avant doing this stuff in the late 80s. According to Mr. Jansen I was old school.
Jeff Joslin/Portland Oregon   01.27.10
this is a nice idea - trying to recycle these containers to make it a home. it might be a solution for the homeless in poor countries... but stacking shipping containers on top of each other isn't structurally sound.
catalina   01.28.10
Temperature control and ventilation could be a real problem. Canal boats have the same problem - too hot or very cold, (and they have windows...).

Really beautiful and creative project...

Great! I love it.

"but stacking shipping containers on top of each other isn't structurally sound." - i am sorry but you are wrong. this is how they stack them on ships that bring them to where ever they are going. This is definitaly a sound structure and even more sound when you stagger them like this. but i do believe that they would need atleast 3 feet around each one that has free space for plumbing, electical and air ventilation.
nichole Howell-gislason daughter of someone who moves these container all day every day   02.03.10
After having worked in onsite offices made up of four shipping containers for about 9 months, well there's a lot more to it than just stacking them up.
Noisy, cold, drafty, damp(especially if they are not new.)
ahummingbird and lisa comments are valid for sure.
WebsterG 02.03.10   02.03.10
Has been done before. Nothing new. Know students who lived in such houses and they became scizzofrenic. The hollow echoing sound of the containers keeps you awake at night.

If Olgga people would have done some research they would know this. This will be a failure.
Steven   02.04.10
It's a great project but there is one problem Temperature control and ventilation. How we can solve this problem.
