kanaleneiland revitalization project

nabito architects have developed a revitalization plan for a neighbourhood in utrecht.
due to the dense population within the area, issues of environmental, functional, social
and economic sustainability have been the main focus of the proposed designs.

in kanaleneiland, the current public spaces fail to foster relationship amongst community
members. establishing better space attractors such as commercial squares, educational,
sport centres and block courts is one part of the revitalization strategy.
to aid in community integration.

to increase access between city and district , a series of axis connectors has been included
in the proposal on three levels. first, connections between the city and district, networks
within the district and finally local street block within the district will all be addressed to
improve traffic flow. pedestrian, cycling streets and more easily accessible parking space
will be implemented to ease traffic flow

reconstruction of the residential building will also be part of the redesign strategy. currently, the private gardens attached to residential buildings take up much of the public space and create a very enclosed structure. the current design proposes to move the facade of residential building back 1 meter, move the garden to ground level and remove the fence dividers. meanwhile, parking spaces are moved to an underground level.
