richard meier architects: US embassy london

the new US embassy in london proposal by richard meier architects

richard meier architects was one of the short listed studios for the new US embassy in london,
which was awarded to kieran timberlake. meier’s submission focused on redefining embassy
architecture with a new focus on openness, approachability and of course security. stylistically
the firm chose to create a timeless piece that seeks to create a landmark feel, while being cohesive
with its surroundings. the main entrance is set back from the gates to add a buffer zone, while
the building’s facade is double-walled for thermal protection and safety. this double wall will also
house a series of shade sails that will be drawn in various patterns depending on the time of day,
season and position of the sun. inside, the design has adaptable floorplans that minimize future
renovations.
