distill studio: box office

box office is as its name implies, an office made of boxes. the 12 unit office complex located in
providence rhode island is made using repurposed shipping containers that have been stacked on top
of one another. the building was designed by joe haskett of distill studio and built by stack design build.
the building up-cycled 160 tons of steel that would have been otherwise wasted. in addition to finding
a use for all 32 shipping containers, the building is 25-30% more energy efficient than the building code
requires. the unit was assembled in an astounding 4 days using the pre-cut containers that were
transported to the site on trucks. the building is the first commercial structure made using repurposed
shipping containers and is set to be complete this spring.

For how long is a shipping container building going to still be worth reporting?
dave   03.09.10
how much does a shipping container cost?
karl   03.09.10
Love this idea. Is really great to see that some architects are using ways to recycle material, and making amazing architecture with it.

A shipping container costs from $ 1000-4000, depends on its age. Shipping container structures are not permanent, I say 5 to 10 years max!

Shipping container structures started from 70s, Once i slept in a 5 story shipping container hotel in 1984 in Asia built in 1979. They took it down by early 90s. It was falling apart.

It'll be worth reporting for as long as brick/wood/concrete buildings are still worth reporting.
trickmycrib   03.09.10
so far its hideous.

Excellent use of materials. To the naysayers, steel if treated accordingly, will last indefinitely. Quote: "the building is 25-30% more energy efficient than the building code requires." That would suggest that their expectation is to have the building around for a while. d;-)

I have a container and in the australian sun its an oven inside. For habitability they need either sunstanial insulation (preferably external) or aircon
