jean nouvel serpentine gallery pavilion 2010

jean nouvel's pavilion for the serpentine gallery

today it was annouced that french architect jean nouvel has been selected to design
the 10th serpentine gallery pavilion.

the design is a contrast of lightweight materials and dramatic metal cantilevered structures.
the entire design is rendered in a vivid red that, in a play of opposites, contrasts with
the green of its park setting. the colour reflects the iconic british images of traditional
telephone boxes, post boxes and london buses.
the building consists of bold geometric forms,
large retractable awnings and a freestanding wall that climbs 12m above the lawn, sloping
at a gravity defying angle. it experiments with the idea of play in its incorporation of the french
tradition of outdoor table-tennis. striking glass, polycarbonate and fabric structures create
a versatile system of interior and exterior spaces. the flexible auditoria will accommodate
the serpentine gallery park nights and marathon and the changing summer weather.

looks like Tschumi's Folies at Parc de La Villette in Paris.
So French, so Chic !
PAB   03.23.10
Yeah La Villette! But isn't it too Tshumi?

Do we have to call architect, a man who actually have no sens of creativity ! I am really bored of this kind of thing - I am not architect but it looks so easy in fact ! just take pieces from past, rearrange them !

Sometimes when i have no ideas of what i wanna create, i prefer to spend the rest of the day walking on the city, than create a last minute serpentine gallery project!
Ahh!!   03.23.10
Too fleshy for my taste!

@Ahh!!, u dun have the balls to be an architect!!! So ur not one!!
So stop putting irrational comments on architectural projects!!!
Do u even know who Jean Nouvel is!!?!! Go google it, show some respect and then talk about the man or the profession!!

i am an architect - and this design is carppy!
nouvels career seems to end....look at his bad designs like reina sofia, madrid....
kike   03.24.10
Delightful. I think it'll really find favour with the London public. I can imagine the translucent nature of the building on a grey day, changing people's mood. If folks go to:

http://www.serpentinegallery.org/architecture/

you will find the previous Serpentine 100-day galleries. This one definitely fits in that framework d;-)

too red to be a relaxing space, seems a darkroom for photographers. works only for the contrast of red-green, but you can not always work like that ... one day the red is saturated!
luzzo   03.24.10
Parece muito bonito de se ver, ao longe porém, não me parece confortável para se estar!!
Simone Alves   03.24.10
ofcorse Tscumi's folies are first what comes to ones minnd. Allthough professional quality of the project is obvious (it's Nuvel nevertheless) but I think it's his weekest work.
dos (architect)   03.25.10
not impress at all
croig   03.25.10
thing is, la villette has a very distinctive feel, the structures feel (to me) quite utilitarian, despite their lack of use. the pavillion looks like it may feel more warm and pleasant. will go and see i guess. either way its gonna be interesting to see london react to a nouvel (or possibly a tschumi) project. cant wait to see change either.
anon   03.28.10
i meant one new change, my bad

Red color from phone booths and double-decker buses? A surprisingly flaccid effort by a great architect. Nouvel's work is usually more provocative and poetic. A missed opportunity for the Serpentine to commission a work that telegraphs the current sensibility of contemporary art in London in a more meaningful way. Perhaps it is an homage to Tschumi.
masu   03.28.10
This is so old!! Let's hire someone new to do the job. Everyone knows this commision didnt work. Why take it all through the end? Ok Nouvel, you didn't get it, lets look for another guy to do the job. Get your check before you leave.
