daniel libeskind: reflections - keppel bay, singapore


'reflections' keppel bay by daniel libeskind

prominently situated at the entrance to singapore’s historic keppel harbor, 'reflections'
at keppel bay by daniel libeskind sits on approximately 84,000 sq metres of land with
an extensive shoreline of 750 metres. set in lush and expansive grounds, the waterfront
development features six high-rise towers, some linked by skybridges, and spacious
low-rise villas.

the sleek curving forms of alternating heights create graceful openings and gaps between
the structures. the spaces between the buildings allow for views to the horizon beyond.
the resulting composition is an interplay of changing planes and reflections.

every detail and aspect of design optimizes interaction with the sea and the commanding
panoramic views of its scenic surrounds including mount faber, keppel club golf course,
labrador park, sentosa and its upcoming integrated resort and the city skyline.

the project includes 1,129 residential units and is expected to be completed in 2011.

I normally like this guys work but this just looks a little clumsy. The individual towers are ok, but together they seem at odds with each other....

It is just plain dumb. It is essentially a standard residential tower with the addition of an entirely superficial curve. All gimmick and no design.

No need to slam all of Liebeskind -- his master plan for the World Trade Center was inspired. But this is plain silly. Ed nailed it. Probably looks intriguing as a model to the viewer of the model, but from any POV once it's in situ, a cartoon underwater plant. The aerodynamics should be interesting.

Anyone else notice how Libeskind's initial "concept sketches" always capture the finished product exactly? I know someone who works in his office. They said that Libeskind usually gets "inspired" to create the "concept sketch" about halfway through the Construction Docs. phase. All of a sudden he "discovers" the original sketch on a napkin or plane ticket buried on his desk. Amazing!

Just look at the clumsy floor plans. There is no architecture there. Libeskind should be ashamed of himself. This is developer crud with a psuedo-starchitect's name pasted on to try and generate buzz.

If one walks into a wood, one would see "boughs" like this. Interesting, however the "pipes" at the top if not for structural integrity, I think would improve the look. The interior design if one takes a "walk through" seems a bit "rabbit-warren like" and a lot of dark spaces. It doesn't help, when the viewer is not given a compass rose, to determine where the light is coming from d;-)

I think the curvature of the architecture serves its purpose well. His consideration to light and how it interacts with his designs is far from frivolous, it's just a reminder of libeskind's attention to detail.
