the completed ‘altis belém hotel’ developed by portugese architectural firm risco is the only hotel in lisbon to be situated right on the bank of the tagus estuary between the bom sucesso dock and the folk art museum.

the ground level of the hotel is publicly accessible and opens up the building to the riverside promenade. this area also houses shops, a restaurant, café, bar and an extensive open-air seating area.

the position of the building lies perpendicular to the tagus, thus, offering a fine view of the city leading down to the river and of the riverside areas from the belém tower to the padrão das descobertas (monument to the discoveries).

the scale of the design and its close proximity to the water helps to establish a relationship with the neighbouring dock. meanwhile, the structure is intentionally positioned in a way so it does not obstruct the view along the axis between the belém tower and the monument to the discoveries.
