anish kapoor: arcelormittal orbit

'arcelormittal orbit' by anish kapoor

indian born, london based artist anish kapoor's 'arcelormittal orbit' has won
the competition to design london's olympic tower for the 2012 games. it is set to
become the largest work of public art in the UK.

standing at almost 115m tall the deep red trumpet shaped tower, will give guests
a view of the london landscape. the tower, named after steel magnate and the richest
man in london, lakshmi mittal, consists of almost 1,400 tonnes of steel. said to cost
around 30 million USD, the project will be undertaken by kapoor and arup engineers.

the tower of babel was apparently a reference, according to kapoor; 'there is a kind
of medieval sense to it of reaching up to the sky, building the impossible. a procession,
if you like. it's a long winding spiral: a folly that aspires to go even above the clouds
and has something mythic about it.'

work is due to start on the steel sculpture in the next few weeks, which the mayor
of london boris johnson hopes will become a rival to paris' eiffel tower.

I see a reminiscence of Tatline's 3rd international tower there.

Should we climb in it or what?

another monstrosity

BOOOO!!!

Awesome, I love rollercoaster type structures.

At least it'll draw attention away from the non-descript stadium and poor Zaha's cheap'n'cheerful aqua centre

It's neat, if u like gigantic zero-gravity afterbirth...

Why not build a proper rollercoaster instead? Maybe a gentle one with scenic views that would suit old folks too...

this is plainly ugly. a monster. another mindless, meaningless pollution and waste of energy recourses. oh it's red! then it must be by anish kapoor... ridiculous! i love his work but that's just low. so sorry for london...a complicated name for red crap!!
Dayvan   04.03.10
C'mon... whats happening these days... i mean, medieval, mythic, babel tower? and then ist RED! ... whats british bout it? ... tell me its a joke... its so incoherent...
Walden   04.04.10
Wow, this is fantastic. Couldn't have wished for anything better than this. Should make our otherwise crappy games and sights look better
Amy   04.05.10
i do not relate this with sports eiter, i respect the artist and i love most of his jobs but i donīt understand the origin... it seems kind of rollercoster or the eiffel tower... is it british?
elmago   04.05.10
pure crap trap....
vk   04.05.10
A fitting monument to what the Olympics have become, a grotesque hormone-induced monster that puts corporate marketing, greed and consumption on a global scale above human athletic achievement and grace. About as contemporary as the babel. There's not much here. Kappor is usually more sublime...

Honestly this reminds me of the 1st-year-shows at my former design faculty or from those fashionable architectural monsters from the 70s which you cannot get rid of once it's there.

Ridiciolous how easy to waste 19 Mio. You only need a quite successful artist's name who might be even currently distressed by lots of other meaningful projects around the globe and later a bunch of well paid PR guys to explain the deeper meaning of the "undertaking" and it's relevant relevance ;)

An artist should better bethink himself of his actual skills and concentrate on each of his projects separately which was quite common too long ago.

In today's globalization of art to many guys rather mutate into art entrepreneurs where hundreds of brownies completing your actual work. But if you are not capable of organizing several huge projects at a time decisively and not having this certain entrepreneurial talent you go better by staying away from these "pandoric forces".

Either go and talk to Ai Wei Wei and ask him on a how-to introduction into art managment or simply stay at your giant mirror blobs where incompetence wouldn't reveal such apparently or pay an extra million on some talented designers to consider and rethink the whole completion.

Here in Germany for instance submissions of the 2nd try of the competition for the 10mio-fall-of-the-wall-monument just closed and we are awaiting a next exhibition.
In its first attempt the jury considered a "re-call" after none of hundreds of submissions has matched with the jury's standards.
Hence we could only come to the conclusion that London was quite in a hurry :-D

Interesting and thought provoking.... this is what good design is all about! Well done Mr Kapoor!
Saxx   04.05.10
do we really need this sort of monsters? Laksmi mittal can as well donate all that money to his poor country cousins living below poverty line & dying by the dozens of hunger!!!!

Anish kapoor's work is normally something that constantly inspires me, due to his ability to create beautiful forms and sensitivity to colour, intertwined with an element of simplicity.

Unfortunately, this proposal falls far short of what I would expect from him and his team! The overall form, looks horrendous and lacking in some major development and refinement. The organic form juxtaposed with the steel mesh like structure does not link together well and the two forms look to be fighting against each other. Though I can understand the logic to wanting to create a dynamic, minimal mesh like structure, and the structural integrity gained in the form visualised, the structure still looks way too dense and overbearing. It could definitely be made to look far more elegant and refined. I fear that time may of been a major inhibitor to this project. I also wonder how much of this was prescribed by the CAD work and generative algorithm/ code used. I understand the desire for a sculpture to be different from every angle viewed, but that should not excuse all its woeful failings that is has.

Steel is a resource that is also increasing dramatically in price. To consume 1,400 tonnes of steel, makes my eyes water in its indulgence, for something overall that services such a limited function. Art goes some way to take a precedent over functional and cost issues, but this I fear goes too far.

The overall intent seems to go against English culture, following a more American ethos of, bigger is better. England normally shines in understated beauty and harmony. This sculpture doesn't represent either of these.

To go on further, this is going to create a major headache to the engineers and its feasibility in construction. Something of this size and magnitude, is going to not only put massive pressure on construction time, but will most likely go over the budget predicted. I am also fearful of its long term structural integrity and safety. One only has to look at Thomas Heatherwick's Big Bang, to look at how a structure similar to this can go badly wrong. Causing a PR nightmare and global embarrassment to London.

I am concerned as well by how much of the success and acceptance of this design proposal was driven simply by the name Anish Kapoor, and a big PR/marketing team behind him. Lets hope what follows in the public domain, is not similar to the reaction gained when the Olympic London 2012 Logo was released.

To finish I am left wondering if this was some sort of acid inspired trip, inspired by the circus ride, "Helter Skelter":

Congrats Sir Kapoor, it's like quintessence 3rd International Tower : abstraction, functionalism and utilitarianism, in fact is the post-mortem triumph of Tatlin Russian Constructivism and his project.

This is probably one of the most disappointingly obtrusive structures I have ever seen anywhere, and for it to actually get permission for it to be built is shocking! It completely sums up London architecture, and the ego involved in coming up with such an idea. Named after the richest man in london?!?!?! What the hell is all this about?! It is so shallow, so capitalist and so disapointing. I love Kapoors work, but this??? Surely there is a better solution?!
