toyo ito: relaxation park - construction halted

relaxation park, torrevieja, spain by toyo ito and associates

the relaxation park in torrevieja in the south of spain designed by toyo ito
remains partially built, with construction halted because of possible infractions of
the coastal law.

the situation has now been highlighted in an exhibition by architect, nathalie gidrón,
in an alicante pub, which shows ‘the ruinous state of the current building’ built in
the shape of a snail from wood and then covered in copper,

although the copper has since vanished and the wood below is now warped from damp.
gidrón considers the building ‘one of the jewels of 21st century architecture.

the torrevieja town hall modified the plans after the order to halt construction was
received, and have denied that the project has been abandoned. other political groups
are calling for the land to be returned to its natural state. read more

that makes you wonder if star-system architects really know what they're doing when they work outside their countries. and why some star-system architects can work all over the world and some architects have to go through long tedious homologation process in Spain. it just makes me wonder.

btw, great project. it's just that's illegal.

this building looks like it would have been really interesting.turf/class warfare, especially among local politicians is a tricky problem to surmount, and certainly not one confined to spain.maybe the building in its current state is a testament/monument to those problems...

This is a call to all the architects out there... when doing a proyect, or just making the idea, first go to the local office for planning, and see whats going on... you never know...
Walden   04.04.10
The text says the that "the town hall" modified plans after the order to halt construction from the costal authority. That sounds like the architect has the approval from the local building office and the problems lie elsewhere.

It is common for an international architect to select a well qualified local partner for planning approval. Those critical of a star architect working in foreign lands lack knowledge of the reality of the situation.

Is it just me, or does every Toyi Ito building looks like crap up close? I have visited a few and was disappointed time and time again...
