shanghai tower by gensler

shanghai tower by international firm gensler is currently under construction and is
due to be complete in 2014.

this super-tall, 632-meter tower is sited in the heart of shanghai’s lujiazui finance
and trade zone, adjacent to the jin mao tower and shanghai world financial center.
as the most prominent icon on the city’s skyline, shanghai tower’s transparent spiral form
showcases cutting-edge sustainable strategies and public spaces that set a new standard
for green community. within its 128-stories, shanghai tower contains class-a office space,
entertainment venues, retail, a conference center, a luxury hotel and cultural amenity spaces.

nine cylindrical buildings are stacked atop each other, enclosed by the glass facade's inner layer.
expanding on the green building concept, wind turbines will be placed on the roof
to generate windpower. and, the building will be situated within a 10,000-square meter
(107,600 square feet) open green space that will become both a public park and the front
entry to the tower.

it will be the tallest building in china and the second tallest in the world, surpassed
only by the burj khalifa in dubai.

Pretty good-looking, but...
it looks like a mix of Calatrava´s Turning Torso and Nouvel´s Tour Sana Fin.

Core design looks excellent and inline with mankind's desire to go skywards. I just wonder at the impact of a severe magnitude earthquake on the foundations of these buildings (while knowing that all modern earthquake protection measures are put in place) and whether it wouldn't pay to design buildings with equal measure above and below ground to better control those forces. Very impressive building d;-)
