pazhou hotel and mixed-use development by international firm aedas is centrally
located with guangzhou’s large, existing exhibition center zone. this district, within
a spit of land in the pearl river immediately outside of guangzhou center, affords views
to the water from both directions, although the project fronts directly onto one of
the water ways itself. the district is filled with very strong and bold formal design moves
and it was deemed important at the beginning that, although fitting into the surrounding
sensitively, the design strives to be unique and iconic to give the project a strong
and comfortable identity within its surroundings, aiding in its success among competing
neighbors.

the development contains multiple levels of retail spaces, supported by food and beverage.
in the basement there is a direct connection to a subway station with a connection to
the lower exhibition hall and supported with fast food outlets. on the second, third and fourth
levels are retail outlets, and food and beverage venues. the fifth floor becomes more food
and beverage focused. floating above the podium is the exhibition space office tower which
is an extension of the exhibition activities below but also convertible into office space.

the lobby, which straddles the other side of the pre-function concourse for the exhibition
hall, has stacked support spaces until the fourth floor where these supporting functions
have space to open up horizontally in the podium. this floor contains restaurants, bars
and the fitness center. in the middle of this floor, tying all these activities together is
the bottom of a grand 60 meter atrium, which is surrounded by the hotel rooms of the tower.

the building is due to be complete in 2012.

I think the top levels are interesting but the retail floors are rather pedestrain and disappointing.

andy bromberg is just a kid without education, intellect or aspiration - let the kid play in china and the middle east - these clients have grown up in the countryside with cheaps just like him... that's why they might like this....

(so sad for china)

prooven - seems you have a few issues you might want to work on before being so rude to a guy who is just getting on with his own beeswax.

did china really become a playground

for freaks to try out their non-existent designing skills?

that future looks creepy

I would say that a design of the building presents generic substance inside (hotel) it. An architect presents non-architectural language (it is not a architecture it is a elemental, eye-catching gesture) and probably this way of designing a building is right and carefully selected. Probably an architect didn't want present explicit architectural masterpiece if the client is all the time cutting hands.

seems like a ship with lots of containers just about to fall :P,
but seriously Chinese people should wake up n stop these freaks from ruining the architecture of their country
