'the pearl – qatar' by international firm callison, is a 14 million-square-foot,
2.5 billion USD island community off the coast of doha, qatar. both a community
and a tourist destination, the pearl is the result of increased efforts to diversify
the country’s economy. built on a former pearl diving site, its name pays tribute to
its strong historical and cultural ties to the sea. the exclusive island retreat will
eventually house more than 30,000 residents in an upscale, multi-cultural community.
the four-phase development comprises 10 distinct districts including beachfront villas,
elegant townhouses, luxury apartments, five-star hotels, marinas, retail and restaurant
offerings.

I'm glad to hear people agree that this is a monstrosity! I don't even want to know what kind of havoc this will wreak on the local marine wildlife. Maybe next time you can build a mountain in China that sucks off millionaires! Callison seems like a real douche bag firm.

taste is a subjective thing, each to their own.
archiman   04.28.10
Disappointing that they haven't used the elements of the area to create something that doesn't blend with its environment. Bland! Agree with the above. Certainly no "Pearl"

yea, what a nice and poetic idea: find a historical and cultural and probably meaningfull place and build hotels on it...
