los angeles-based architect frank gehry has designed a home for the make it right foundation in the lower 9th ward
of new orleans, louisiana. the 1,780 square foot duplex features rooftop terraces shaded with a waterproof canopy of solar panels
which generate clean energy for the site. two-toned with teacup rose along the main elevation and lily lilac in the rear,
the front-to back positioning of the residences improves circulation within the dwellings. stacking stairways, bathrooms and
a great room with the kitchen, dining and living area encourage construction efficiency.

the exterior is clad with a siding of fiber cement boards to resist cracking, rot, termites and weather damage for a span of 50 years.
the framing lumber which elevates and frames the structures is treated to repel moisture, fungus, wood rot and insects. a 26-gauge metal roof
protects the lower level porches, requiring little maintenance while minimizing solar gain and needs to cool the dwelling.

additional features include low-E windows to insulate from the seasonal changes in temperature. zero VOC paints eliminate off-gassing.
cabinets are formed with sustainably harvested woods grown in environmentally conscious methods while flooring is a laminated hardwood
which uses 50% less wood. countertops are formed with 75% recycled raw material including glass, mirror, porcelain and corn oil resin.

'I really believe in what brad is doing for the community and was honored to be included, I wanted to make a house
that I would like to live in and one that responded to the history, vernacular and climate of new orleans. I love the colors
that the homeowner chose. I could not have done it better.'

Never mind a hurricane. I think a steady breeze will level this!

Looks like you three, john, L.M.U.R. and ricky live in a virtual world and don\'t know how much effort it takes to build an affordable house like this.

Furnishing and lighting is just terrible. Not so much the shell
Fernando   07.17.12
Frank's office is obviously too far removed from reality. Inventive affordable housing is a niche that has passed him by. Let's leave this kind of stuff for the Mockbee disciples.
AUDevil   07.17.12
Agree with Stepan. This is obviously a shell design only. Lighting & such left to the developer. Probably a donation of time & effort on Gerry\'s part. Good architects are appropriate to the program & budjet constraints. This is not a museum or some other urban icon of ego. Lighten up! AUDevil: Quite the contrary, this IS reality, look in mirror.

Lost Horizon.

Had Pitt et al enlisted the design-build efforts of so many of the leading architectural schools or even simply followed their example, he might have created a model program with quite substantial and far reaching effects beyond the 9th Ward. Instead, we get the dabbling \"let\'s put on a show\" egotistical \"showcase\" of self-serving architects clearly demonstrating how incapable they are of meeting the challenges, further diminishing the profession\'s image.

Inglorious bastards.
Chaszr   07.17.12
@ Chaszr....Always missing the point, smh

All that was desired here was a house for two families that are still in need of basic shelter. An architect with the long-standing career of Frank Gehry has more financial security than most architects in today's harsh economic climate and contributed a pro bono structure, which is not easy for any professional to do. You clearly know how much time is involved with all architectural projects.

"he might have created a model program" Really? What else does a shelter need to achieve? This comment clearly comes from a person who has a comfortable and cozy place to sleep at night.

"Instead, we get a dabbling "let's put on a show" egotistical "showcase"" Really? What pictures are you looking at? I don't see the Guggenheim in Bilbao or Walt Disney Concert Hall here. In fact, I don't see a single zinc panel or curved wall.

Maybe if you remove your head from your @ss and use your two eyeballs for what they are intended, you can see that this a real project for real people and its about to receive two families in need in New Orleans.

Todos los postulados de Le Cobusier y la casa Citrohan, en las dos ultimas imagenes, reinterpreta la tipologia individual a colectiva pero con una apropiacion del sitio de tipologia de vivienda individual.
una vivienda para estudiar.

I happen to know that the interior is all furnished with stock 'make it right' purchases that they got in bulk before the designs for houses were finished. They tried to get as much for as little as they could. This design is infinitely more realistic than some of the others in the bunch. And if nothing else, the make it right project is creating one of the more architecturally diverse residential neighbourhoods in North America. Whether it's been successful or not is largely dependent on what we would define as successful.

Chaszr   07.17.12
we should be thankful. how we appreciate architecture varies from person to person. while we may have developed standards of what \"good architecture is\" that will work for some, this may not be true to others. We need to respect and appreciate architecture for what it is. non respective of who designed what. there\'s not room for apathy and discrimination in our world.

for this work -- it must have been limited to the resources available. time and money are factors. Its a good job with a noble cause.

Appreciate. Felicidades!
