alexander graham bell center in scotland gets update from jmarchitects

the ‘alexander graham bell center’ is a healthcare teaching facility that provides a principle research, education and continued professional development center for the life science sector practicing in northeastern scotland. completed by scottish studio jmarchitects, the project is split into two projects created in tandem.

jmarchitects’ primary work was the construction of a life science center, located on the northwestern reaches of the campus. the building includes a contemporary conference facility, along with research rooms, mock wards, and associated classrooms/learning spaces. the team also formed a completely new circulation space that enables entrance to the moray college facility while simultaneously linking the ‘B’ listed academy building, learning science center, and other adjacent structures.

integration with history

to make room for the extension, existing accommodations were destroyed. the built form was re-aligned to better serve as the public frontage of the university. also included in the work, is a garden, double height glazed gallery link, and significant advancement in considerations for wheelchair users and other disabled individuals.

social areas provide a a visual link to the entrance and existing academy building

the extension’s two upper floors provide multiple teaching and enterprise spaces, along with varied learning environments and informal study nooks. since the mix of students is greatly varied, it is hoped that numerous options will promote interaction and open discussions. the ‘alexander graham bell center’ was jointly funded by moray college UHI, HIE, NHS grampian and the EU.
